The topic we’re going to talk about is how to connect Facebook and WordPress plugins. We’re going to talk about using JetPack, a multi-faceted plugin developed and maintained by Automattic, the publisher of WordPress. While JetPack has a whole host of cool tools built in to supercharge your WordPress site, we’re only going to focus on using the WordPress JetPack Facebook module.
Now this plugin can be downloaded from the WordPress plugins repository at http://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/ or how we’re going to do it.
We’re gonna go to the WordPress administration pages. This is done by typing in the url of your blog followed by forward slash wp-admin. You will be prompted for your administrative username and password. Type that in and press the “Login” button.
So we’re gonna go all the way to the down to the bottom of our administrative menu. We’re gonna hover over this “Plugins” menu and up will pop the hover menu and we’re gonna choose “Add New”. This will obviously bring up the “Install Plugins” administrative page. Now what you’re gonna do is type in “JetPack” in the Search field and press the button that says “Search Plugins”.
You’ll see a list of plugins. Choose JetPack and go ahead and click “Install Now”. After it is installed, you’re going to have actually ‘Activate the Plugin’.
Now that it is activated you’re gonna have to go to the top left of your administrative menu. There you will see the JetPack menu. Select “JetPack”. Now what you’re gonna have to do is connect your site to WordPress.com. So you’ll probably have to set yourself up a WordPress.com account. Once you’ve done that you click “Authorize”. You’ll wait a few moments and then you’ll be connected! Now what this does is give you a ton of new tools for your WordPress site. However, for this demo we’re going to be focused on this one here “Publicize”. We’re gonna click “Configure”.
This will bring you to the sharing settings page. Here you can just click “Add New Facebook Connection”. A box will pop up your Facebook profile and any accompanying pages. Once you’re connected, you are set!
But wait that’s not all! You’re now gonna have to use it! So let’s go on over to add a new post. You’re gonna have to type in a title, a few lines of text. And you’ll see over here under the Publish section. There’s the sub-section called Publicize. There you’ll see your Facebook connection. Publish your post and a captioned post will also now appear on your Facebook timeline.
TIP: Sometimes your token may expire when you post. This will basically break your connection to Facebook and your posts won’t show up on Facebook. The easiest way to fix this is to delete the old connection and reauthorize the WordPress/Facebook connection.
That’s just how easy it is folks! For more info on doing other cool things with WordPress, check out my other WordPress Lessons on eHow.com and check out Build.Automate’s innovative WordPress plugins at www.buildautomate.com.
